Neutral Bay

Neutral Bay is a harbourside suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, located only 3kms from the heart of the CBD. The suburb offers a dynamic mix of cosmopolitan services and breathtaking harbour settings, providing all the best features of Sydney living.

The name ‘Neutral Bay’ originates from the arrival of the First Fleet. Foreign ships from other nations began to slip into Sydney Harbour to see what the fuss was all about. Captain Arthur Phillip declared that the bay was a neutral harbour where foreign ships could anchor and take on water and supplies. Neutral Bay was far enough away from Sydney Cove to discourage convicts from escaping on these vessels and to keep possible enemy ships at a distance from the main settlement.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Neutral Bay and Cremorne became populated by people who were attracted to the Arts & Crafts architectural style that was in vogue at the time. This style was an attempt to get away from mass production and give homes the “human touch”.

Many of the grand 19th Century residences have escaped the attention of Sydney’s property developers, offering to a new century the elegant living of their past. Amongst these fine homes are stylish apartments from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, and contemporary townhouse style developments geared to the needs of busy commercial life.

Military Road and its surrounding streets support a flourishing shopping centre. Supermarkets, all services, designer clothing and elegant homewares can be found mingling with a vibrant café society catering to the laid back atmosphere of the Neutral Bay village.

Neutral Bay is within close and easy reach of virtually every cultural, educational, sporting and recreational facility that Sydney offers. It is also these days a dining-out destination, and the local cinema complex is noted for its quality offerings and splendid art nouveau architecture.

Government bus services transport passengers to the CBD, Manly and the Northern Beaches, Chatswood and North Sydney. Residents can also get rapid access to Circular Quay by both public harbour ferry services and private ferries stopping at Neutral Bay, Kurraba Point and High Street wharves.
