Kirribilli

Kirribilli is a harbourside suburb sitting on the Lower North Shore of Sydney Harbour, approximately 3 kilometres north of the CBD. The name Kirribilli is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Kiarabilli’ which means ‘good fishing spot’. Kirribilli is one of Australia’s oldest and most established suburbs, and is famous for its elevated position and spectacular views over Sydney Harbour.

The northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is situated in Kirribilli. The Warringah Freeway goes south across the Bridge to the Sydney CBD and north to Chatswood.  Kirribilli is serviced by regular buses, ferries and trains – the closest train station being Milsons Point.

Kirribilli is home to the infamous Luna Park, and at nearby Milsons Point you will be faced with breathtaking views across the harbour to the Sydney Opera House through the Harbour Bridge. North Sydney business district is just around the corner and offers an array of cafes, restaurants, shops and leisure facilities, including the historic North Sydney Olympic Pool.

The ‘Kirribilli Markets’ are a popular event, and are held on the fourth Saturday of each month. They offer a mix of new and second hand clothing, jewellery, bric-a-brac, and a variety of food and drink.

Kirribilli features a small, village-style shopping strip opposite Milsons Point Railway Station, with a number of popular restaurants and cafes offering a choice of contemporary Australian, Thai, Indian, Italian and seafood. Also found here are boutique shops, gift stores, a small supermarket, a liquor store and a florist.

Predominantly a residential suburb, the first apartment block was built here in 1908 and as apartment living became increasingly popular in the 1930s the area experienced an apartment building boom. Development mainly occurred along the waterfront, closest to the ferry, as most residents commuted to the city for employment. These days Kirribilli is a character-filled suburb offering convenient access to the city together with some of Sydney’s best harbour views.
